Jennifer Ho

Associate Professor, English and Comparative Literature
More about Programming
This workshop will discuss the origins of the category “Asian Americans”—
how people of Asian ancestry became racialized in the United States, the boundaries of the category “Asian American,” the Asian American movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s, particularly its connection to social justice movements such as the black Civil Rights movement, third world liberation movement, and anti-war movement. We will also discuss what it means to identify as Asian American and consider how one becomes Asian American.
Asian American Civic &
Political Engagement
Sean Lew
Assistant Professor, Charlotte School of Law
Fellow, North Carolina Institue of Pollitical Leadership
Asian Americans are underrepresented in certain fields such as law, journalism—and politics.  This workshop will examine current efforts in Asian American civic and political engagement in our state which include voter registration, voter turnout, canvassing and naturalization drives.  Professor Lew will lead an interactive discussion to develop ideas on how to foster engagement with a historically overlooked segment of our population.

Exploring Asian American

Civil Rights Experiences and Priorities

Dani Moore and Chavi Koneru
North Carolina Justice Center

Join us for an interactive discussion about past and present events that have violated the rights of Asian Americans in the US, ranging from prohibiting the immigration of “undesirable women” to physical injury resulting from police encounters. This workshop will allow participants to reflect on the common struggles faced by Asian American communities and discuss priorities for moving forward together in North Carolina. Our hope is that this workshop will help participants recognize that despite having many different languages, traditions and beliefs, Asian Americans share experiences and values that can bring us together as a cohesive community in the fight for equal rights.
